July 4, 2025 – From Cradle to Cloud: Surveillance and Digitalisation around Childhood

Event Description: The European Parliament hosted a hybrid panel on the dangers of data sharing and privacy risks in the modern era. The event primarily focused on kids-as-consumers of media (for example, ensuring that data is handled responsibly by online service providers). However, researcher Emma Beuckels spoke about kids-as-producers and the “platformization of the family,” referring to kids who are heavily featured on family social media accounts for a profit. Quit Clicking Kids is honored to have their advocacy work featured in the new Hulu documentary Child StarChild Star is Demi Lovato’s directorial debut featuring actors and activists discussing the potential impacts of unregulated child entertainment.

Event Description: Quit Clicking Kids was featured for our work as the original co-crafter of legislation aiming to protect children who are monetized on family social media accounts in Washington State. The documentary is now available on Hulu and Disney+.

Event Description: When social media becomes monetized, influencing becomes an industry. But often, the child stars of monetized social media accounts have no legal privacy protections or avenues to the revenue they help generate.
