Latest Washington Updates

In 2021, Chris McCarty and a non-partisan council staffmember created a bill to protect children who are consistently shared and monetized on family social media accounts. This bill was then introduced by former Representative Emily Wicks as HB 2032. HB 2032 is one of the first bills of its kind in its protections for children featured on for-profit family vlogs.

Following Representative Wicks’s retirement, HB 2032 was been re-introduced as HB 1627 by WA State Representative Kristine Reeves with no subsequent language changes. Although HB 1627 had a hearing, it did not move out of committee. However, it is set to be re-introduced next session in December following review from community stakeholders.
